Strouthous takes readers on a playful and yet poignant coming of age journey of one giraffe who is feeling sad about not having a sound of its own. Every time the giraffe on the Serengeti plains looks at other animals with different voices, it becomes sad for not having a sound of its own. Feeling dejected, the giraffe meets a little mouse and realizes it has something unique that others do not have. Strouthous follows his protagonist as he happens upon the fearsome leopard, the majestic eagle, and the wise little mouse. The prose flows easily off the pages, and the giraffe’s story gives rise to conversations about the importance of taking pride in one’s own unique qualities, what friendship is, and how friends can help each other. Young readers will feel every emotion of the giraffe as it admires others’ sounds while musing about its own lack of voice. Ekaterina Akulshina’s warm colored illustrations are equally friendly, complimenting the storyline while highlighting adorable, expressive characters.
