Author interview

Tate’s latest, the second installment in her time-travel series, is a finely crafted tale featuring nuanced characters in a unique setting. Sophie Arundel is still stuck in a grand house in 1925’s England in a parallel universe. But with Charlotte, her loyal dog, at her side and Hugo Harrington, her crush, also stranded there, life is not that bad. When a revolution threatens the Manor and people there, Sophie sets out to find the hidden portal to the twenty-first century, unaware of the danger awaiting her ahead. Through an engrossing storyline and well-crafted characters, Tate beautifully interjects elements of time travel while delving into the intricacies of love and relationships along with the racism and sexism of the period. The novel features a fully fleshed-out cast of characters: Sophie’s courage, candor, and self-reflection imbue the story with the perfect balance of insight and momentum. Her relationship with Anne, Maud, and others is particularly refreshing. Hugo remains thoroughly intriguing. The secondary characters are all vibrant, original, and relatable. This installment solves some major plot conflicts from the first volume but leaves enough questions unanswered, making readers anxious for the next one. Readers seeking a wholly engaging, substantial time travel romance will not be disappointed as the novel covers both turbulent feelings and significant questions around identity, courage, trauma, and what happens when we face our own inner darkness. An excellent tale filled with richness and complexity.
