Book excerpt

It’s been ages since Aliens altered the human population after invading Earth and extracting their precious energy. But a sickness is ravaging the Alien population and their energy sources are dwindling at an alarming rate. With a rebellion threatening to upstage his empire, the One has no option but to send a team to Earth and see if they can find a source of energy and save the population. But Earth is not the same planet they left centuries ago. Lazarus’s novel is a carefully plotted, engrossing first contact adventure with plenty of twists and turns. The narrative alternates between various voices, making the story a bit difficult to follow at times, but Lazarus keeps the pacing smooth and momentum steady. He renders his characters and their struggles with great sympathy, exploring their inner turmoil, fears, and insecurities. Robert, Niamh, and Thomas are strong, interesting characters who are easy to like. Alien and human protagonists are from different dimensions, so the conflict between them is vividly layered. The book’s pacing is smooth, prose assured, and tension stays high with hefty suspense constantly in the background. With its intriguing blend of sci-fi action and life philosophy, this heartfelt tale is sure to charm sci-fi readers.
