Corbett’s latest children’s picture book is a solid read that gently encourages discussions about compassion, understanding, and consideration, taking readers on a young boy’s journey to ending injustice, inequality, starvation, and violence. Sensitive and kind-hearted WHOA loves his weekend routines with his dad but finds it hard to cope with the despairing emotions he feels when they listen to the nightly news together. One day, Whoa decides enough is enough and decides to deal with the problems himself. Honing his fighting skills seems like a good idea. But does he really need to learn martial arts to fight cruelty, violence, and injustice in the world? Corbett deftly uses a delightful rhyming scheme and an expressive father-son cast to diligently detail one young child’s single-minded pursuit of fighting unfairness and tragedies. Beautifully crafted text (“Whoa would feel his heart dropping like a leaf/ Down, Down, from its branch”) and intimate portraits of father-son moments make this a reflective, heartwarming story. Using bright colors and a vibrant palette of various colors, Richardo Galvao creates visually striking spreads that are thoroughly pleasant to the eyes. Charming, relevant, and not at all preachy—a must-read for all youngsters.
