Two teenagers set out on a journey of love and enlightenment in Micko’s compulsively readable latest YA drama. When 8th grader Brooklyn announces she is forming the GSA, Gay Straight Alliance, to pay tribute to the bad girls of history, Sydney is quick to join the club. But the complications arise when the girls fall for each other. Growing up in dysfunctional, conservative Muslim families, the girls have their own fair share of drama to deal with. How do they acknowledge and express their growing feelings for each other? And what about Jennings’ dangerous uncle, who is posing a threat to the GSA? Equally sweet and thought-provoking, this story highlights how unpredictable and chaotic life can be and how there are no easy answers or solutions. The narrative also offers important discussions about dysfunctional families, LGBTQ issues, adolescent angst, addiction, misogyny, religious choices, love, friendships, courage, and determination. Sydney and Brooklyn are appealing and fully-developed characters with headstrong personalities. The book’s pacing is fast, and the bickering between the pair is cinematically portrayed. Following numerous missteps and misadventures, the story culminates in a satisfying ending. An intriguing, timely story that shows the life-affirming effect of love, friendship, and community; a must-read.
