A young woman must tread a difficult path to get accepted in her new life in McLain’s debut installment The Mayari Chronicles series. Medious Ameryk finds her life turning upside down after she is called up early to take her place in a new life as an Artemi. Born with a rare eye color, Medious soon becomes the target of malicious rumors. But her guildmates’ hostility is not the only problem she has to face; there are people who wants to destroy her at any cost. As the narrative progresses, McLain explores several complex and relevant topics, such as courage, resilience, compassion, identity, with understanding and sensitivity. Medious, born with a peach eye color, is considered evil, and her portrayal gives readers insight into the challenges that can arise from others’ lack of understanding, empathy, and acceptance. At the same time, Medious’s story underscores the positives of embracing one’s identity. Her courage, determination, and resilient spirit allows readers to relate to what she endures. Laisren comes across as a fully fleshed-out, intriguing character. Their romance is sweet, and readers will root for a happy outcome for the pair. Despite the heaviness of the central theme, the story manages to be lighthearted and entertaining. The fantasy setting is fascinating and well realized, making it easy to become fully immersed in Medious and Laisren’s journey of love and fulfillment. A timely fantasy that explores multiple complex themes with coming-of-age elements.
