Debut author Avant delves into narcissistic personality disorder, exploring the connections between the psychology of the narcissist, the current political situation, history, and the socio-psychological factors inherent in American society today. The narrative is a mix of painstaking research, personal experience, and everyday anecdotes. Narcissists are everywhere, Avant writes, from someone in your family or friends circle to the people who have risen to positions of power, authority, and leadership in the society. They exhibit excessive self-admiration and egotism, as well as a grandeur sense of noble entitlement. Many of these individuals lack empathy, and they also suffer from a significant lack of self-esteem. Being the recipients of unnecessary praise, they are so validated in everything they do that they are shocked when criticism comes rolling their way. Their inert fear of self-awareness and evaluation combined with their deep-rooted insecurity fuels the fear of guilt and vulnerability, making it difficult for them to seek and find a cure for their disorder. The book also examines the role of heredity and environment while covering a wide swath of political, sociological, historical, educational, and religious terrain, and connecting it to the current surge in narcissism which has permeated not only the United States but also the world. The real-life examples, such as Donald Trump’s ability to tap into the nation’s collective narcissism; the Republicans’ conscious use of racism as their weapon of choice to garner the support of the racist White vote; the prevalence of narcissism within leadership positions in institutions among others give the book weight and substance. Readers fascinated with the psychology of the human mind will appreciate Avant’s take on devilishly manipulative people and their presence in every corner of modern society.
