While the cast includes a horde of well-drawn characters, from humans, dragons, halflings to dwarves, the brash and uncultured Krell and his band of warriors steal the limelight. The pacing remains smooth, and the high-stakes action scenes are well constructed and exciting. Krell’s mission to unravel the secrets of The Betterment Society enhances the urgency of the plot, and the multiple overlapping plotlines are enjoyable and high-energy. There are hints along the way of a larger threat, keeping the reader turning pages fast. The cliffhanger conclusion deftly sets up the sequel. Fast-paced, gripping, and impeccably plotted, a treat for epic fantasy lovers.
