After a parallel society gets hold of a devastating technology, a documentary cameraman unites with two enigmatic strangers to stop them in O’Connor’s outstanding thriller. As an experienced cameraman, Mason Plater had worked on award winning documentaries and TV series, but nothing prepared him for the surreal experience when he arrived at the “Dead Zone” ward of a hospital facility to film a documentary. Soon after, a beautiful woman begins to visit him in his dreams, claiming she’s Gail Hartstone, a comatose patient he saw in the facility. As Mason’s dreams get stranger and stranger, he teams up with a young intern, Molly. The duo soon unearths a shocking thing: Mason has a special ability and can enter alternate dreamworlds. O’Connor draws on his alternate dream reality world in compelling ways, and the dialogue, in particular, is concise. While characters are dynamic, especially Plater, Molly, Gail, and Bartholomew, the most memorable is Zach, whose story unfolds at a steady clip. Readers will be on the edge of their seats to know what lies ahead for the curious man. The alternate dreamworld reality elements are well developed and believable, high-stakes scenes of otherworldly action feel truly consequential. The narrative impressively bounces among several plotlines and characters, rolling along at a consistent pace. Readers will be drawn in by the novel’s intriguing storyline, tight plotting, and satisfying ending. This cinematic and deeply gripping thriller of alternate realities is a knockout.
