Eevee’s realization that she can either run and avoid her fate or face it with courage propels the narrative, which alternates between Eevee and Quince’s first-person voices. The story’s well-timed action and relentless twists make for page-turning thrills, while flutters of romance and feelings of kinship offer moments of reprieve from the lingering darkness surrounding Nightglade’s presence. The fantastical elements are thoroughly executed, as is the plot, and the shocking twist toward the end packs a satisfying punch. A brilliant ending to a stunning series.
