A little curiosity prompts a young caterpillar to venture out and find a new world full of adventure and self-discovery in Pimienta’s fun and whimsical picture book. The tiny little black and white caterpillar is living a content life in her cocoon feeding on leaves, playing, and sleeping. But her inner curiosity picks up after she spots a speck of gray in her monochrome world. As she begins to explore, she realizes there’s a whole new world full of fun and adventure waiting outside. The English and Spanish text on each page is presented in straightforward prose, making English learners feel included and elevating the status of the heritage language, and at the same time, helping children realize that both languages are equally important. The child-appropriate bilingual prose, geared toward budding or lap readers, the whimsical little caterpillar (butterfly later) and the gradually brightening landscapes will draw curious little minds. Most beguiling, however, is the way Pimienta infuses the central message into the child-friendly narrative: venture into the unknown and try new things if you want to grow and discover your real self. The vibrant, full-color illustrations are delightful to look at. A charming, clever, and feel-good book for curious minds.
