Author interview

Moore aims his philosophical musings about the meaning of life, death, and the nature of consciousness at the subgenre of hard SF. After Ben Garcia Lopez, planetary Geologist and commander of the Pioneer spacecraft on a historical mission, dies after their space vessel crash lands on a strange-looking planet, his remaining crew of four members know they have no option but to find a way to survive on the new planet. But the planet is conscious and is actively trying to kill the survivors. This engrossing, well-paced SF tale deftly merges the concept of collective consciousness with elements of dystopia to examine topics, such as life and death, dream and reality, and awareness and unconsciousness. Moore does an excellent job of slowly introducing readers to a strange new world that is incredibly alien and yet utterly familiar. Moore’s characterization is excellent: Ben, Serra, Ty, Sergei, and Lindy make for a group of likable protagonists who try to find their way through an alien world without losing track of their humanity. Dave-head is insightful, witty, and, in fact, as much human—as the humans around it. Through the group’s story, Moore skillfully explores the boundless human ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from impossible life situations. An original, engaging, and thoughtful dystopian tale.
