A young owl discovers that determination and effort can be more powerful than any tool or ability in Enright’s debut children’s picture book. Erin the Owl is desperate to become an amazing dancer. But her attempts are clumsily received, what with pig and cow tittering when she falls, not to mention the general chuckling of other animals in the forest. Raccoon, bunny, and beaver take pity on her and encourage her to practice more and more. Will Erin manage to master the art of dance? Erin’s tale, which is accompanied by vivid illustrations, depicting her journey of learning to dance, beautifully emphasizes the importance of resilience, determination, and hard work to children, and it does so in an easily understandable way: through the story, readers are able to see what the young owl eventually comes to understand: success comes through hard work and dedication. Raccoon, beaver, and rabbit’s friendship with Erin and their encouragement offer comforting messages of camaraderie and community. Enright’s straightforward prose is age-appropriate, and the characters—especially little Erin—are endearingly portrayed. Rebecca Bush’s bright, full-color illustrations are adorable and rendered in a style that resembles a child’s crayon drawings. A simple but beautiful story about tenacity and drive.
