Tell us about your new release, Owls Can Dance!
It’s about an owl named Erin, who wants to learn how to dance. But it’s harder than she thought. She tries to be graceful but keeps falling down. With the help from some good friends – raccoon, bunny and beaver — Erin decides to make her dreams come true.
What inspired you to write the story?
When I was younger, I had a similar experience! I really wanted to be a dancer in a local theater production but was very uncoordinated. It’s amazing what a little encouragement from family and friends can do!
Tell us a little bit about how this story came to be. Did it start with an image, a voice, a concept, or something else?
A childhood memory. I used to practice dancing at night in our back yard, leaping across a series of small hills. My dog would run circles around me. In the book, I thought it would be fun to include other animals. I’m excited about the illustrations created by Rebecca Bush. The images and colors really bring the story to life.
What are the key themes in the book?
Kindness certainly, and to be a good friend.
Positivity: encourage others to succeed. Sometimes a few words can make a huge difference.
Last but not least is determination – to believe in yourself, keep practicing, and never give up!
What’s next for you?
Thanks for asking! The next book is scheduled for release in a few months. It’s about a bunny who receives a happy surprise.
What advice would you give aspiring writers?
You can do it! Believe in yourself and know that potential readers are looking for your story.
