Author interview

Burns’s young protagonist inadvertently gets caught up in a dangerous mystery after unearthing a child’s skull in her gripping middle-grade novel. While digging for arrowheads at his grandparents’ quarry, Tyler Scott finds a human skull and begins investigating. He encounters the ghost of a young boy named Ben, who asks for help finding his father. Tyler and his friends Addy and David’s investigation leads to a 30-year-old missing persons case involving a silver mine and antiques, all while someone follows the trio’s every move. Will the friends find the truth and bring closure to Ben? In this lively and captivating story told in Tyler’s voice, readers will be enthralled by his bravery, cleverness, and moral code as he leads his two sidekicks on a thrilling mission to solve an exciting mystery. The narrative’s first-person perspective captures Tyler’s infinite curiosity and urge to do the right thing. Ben’s ghostly presence propels the adventure forward, and important themes such as integrity, morality, prejudice, dishonesty, greed, friendship, family, and how we shape our communities are discussed in an age-appropriate way. The bittersweet conclusion is both satisfactory and heartwarming. Beautifully crafted and gratifying to read, the book makes for a page-turning read.
