This first-half of the second installment of DiPaolo’s The Dragon Storm series finds Alexander Storm and Company caught in an evil web of rituals and retribution. When an obsidian-shrouded magician utters powerful magical words evoking an ancient evil entity, Alexander Storm and his teammates embark on a dangerous journey across the globe in order to stop the impending danger from gaining dominion. As they dive deeper into this new mission, they realize they might be facing more evil forces than they can handle. DiPaolo’s quick pacing and thoroughly developed characters are aided by his seamless blending of archeology with the uncanny. Details regarding the supernatural forces and ancient history are equally immersive. The narrative moves at a measured pace, keeping both suspense and tension high. Alexander continues to be an endearing hero, and his tendency to do things on a whim makes the story all the more unpredictable. Still, this sequel takes a step back from Alexander and gives the supporting characters, especially Asar and Frank, some overdue time in the spotlight. The cliffhanger finale ties up major plot threads while leaving a few loose ends to bolster readers’ excitement for the next half of the novel. This excursion into the ancient ruins of Solomon and beyond is a taut, relentless fun.
