Erickson returns to charm youngsters with this delightful, deeply imaginative early reader. What if animals went on holiday? The places they’d go! A penguin to a beach, an ostrich to a massive rock cliff, a spider off to a video game store, an elephant in space, a beaver to a large LEGO® convention, and what about a parrot? Wherever it may be, each animal would choose someplace that’s just right for them, but can you guess where that might be? The book has occasional unusual entries, such as armadillos, child-friendly text, and beautifully rhymed prose: “Every morning spiders have to restore/ The web they’d just spun the day before./ Spinning and spinning, they’re put to the test./ Even the hardiest spider can use a rest.” The animals featured in these pages are endearing, each with their own unique quirks that make them feel almost alive. Their escapades bring out giggles and guffaws, while teaching fascinating facts about them. The message that after a strenuous day of toiling, one should merit some leisure is neatly woven into the narrative. Whimsical illustrations provide a perfect companion to the creative text, as flat muted backgrounds showcase the unique drawings. This captivatingly wacky book is sure to be a smash hit amongst early readers. A true charmer.
