A woman struggles to begin afresh after committing a heinous crime in Malin’s thrilling latest novel. Dr. Jessamyn Quilter has done something terrible, and she must set things right again in order to start fresh. She books a long sea voyage aboard the MV Andaman Pearl, a container ship. Once aboard, events begin to go from bad to worse. Jessamyn must find a solution if she wants to forget her past and move ahead. The many story threads in this book are captivating, including Lovely and Sofia’s individual journeys, Shun’s investigation, and the backstory of the Amazonian native tribe and its guardians of harmony.  Malin highlights Jessamyn’s turmoil skillfully, as she grapples with the fear of getting exposed. Suspense and tension are in plenty, and the secondary cast is fully realized. Diabolical plotting, swift pacing, and meticulous worldbuilding come together with Jessamyn’s affecting first-person narration to create maximum suspense and propel the story forward. Jessamyn’s journey to completing the dieta and medicine ceremonies under Grandmother Aya, the jaguars, and the teacher plants’ guidance leads to an intriguing narrative turn that leads to a riveting final act and a satisfactory ending. The plot stands out for its tightly-wound tension during the beginning and the delicate bond shared between the main protagonists in the second half. It’s a thrilling journey from start to finish.
