In Bocher’s newest novel, the lasting effects of a previous traumatic experience loom ominously over the future of a young couple. Mitch had lost his parents at a young age and was thankful for the scholarship that allowed him to attend Widmark College. However, he faced cruel treatment from two fellow students, causing him to drop out and join Mining Consortium International. While on a mission in Afghanistan, he crosses paths with Emma, an attractive administrative assistant. As they become closer, Mitch’s troubled past continues to haunt him. He turns to Dr. Linda House, MCI’s psychiatrist, for guidance. Will he be able to find happiness with Emma? The novel depicts Mitch’s sexual exploitation in graphic detail, along with mature content. His difficult past and sense of isolation make him a prime target for abuse, which Bocher accurately portrays. The book also explores themes of love, desire, familial bonds, human connections, and guidance from others. Emma’s compassionate and understanding nature provides some relief to Mitch’s emotional wounds. The well-developed supporting characters, particularly Betty Jo, General Wheeler, and Dr. Linda House, add depth to the story, which concludes with a bittersweet ending. Intriguing and moving.
