Author interview

Despite the overwhelming influence of science and technology on our world, scientific literacy remains elusive for masses, writes Soplop. Factors like misinformation, social media reliance, political polarization, and lack of trust, are the ones that hinder our ability to understand and address major issues. Through her thought-provoking and plausible analysis, Soplop presents a comprehensive view of science as a complex system comprised of various components that work together to reveal the mysteries of our world. She emphasizes the importance of utilizing this understanding to address issues not only in the hard sciences but also in social domains such as gun violence, the opioid crisis, education disparities, healthcare accessibility, maternal mortality, and systemic racism. Through case studies, Soplop reveals common tactics used to distort scientific information in areas such as climate change, wellness, pseudoscience, anti-vaccination movements, and the Covid-19 response. Soplop’s timely investigation shows how by increasing our understanding of science, we can gain the power to make more informed decisions and better navigate the complexities of the world. This knowledge can not only benefit us individually, but also contribute towards making positive changes in our society as a whole. A brilliantly told, eye-opening read that provides a much-needed perspective about the present-day information crisis.
