Sins of the past return to haunt the present in a long game of revenge in Snowden’s concluding installment in the Maxwell Muggs Trilogy. Maxwell Muggs hasn’t had time to catch his breath after his confrontation with Nigel when menacing letters asking for an extortionate amount of money start arriving. In an effort to locate the writer of these notes, Maxwell uncovers a buried family secret that puts him at a moral crossroads—he must choose between doing what is morally right and guarding his lineage’s name. Snowden imbues the somewhat familiar premise with thoughtful characterizations, painting a convincing portrait of the emotional toll that Maxwell’s mysterious illness takes on him. Writing with empathy and insight, he reveals something not only about the main cast whose lives he sketches in these pages, but also delves into subjects of love, loss, turmoil, crisis, trauma, and a sense of personal connection between the people living through it. The deepening bond between Mathew and Gillian, as well as the unveiling of the Muggs family’s secret past, imbue the novel with emotion and intrigue to enrich its revenge-centered storyline. Snowden’s writing is straightforward, and what initially appears to be a simple suspenseful story intensifies as it reaches its climax. An apt conclusion to a thrilling series that can be read as a standalone novel as well.
