Widjaja turns mathematical concepts into a playful exploration of cake, juice, and colorful comparisons in her fun picture book. Structured as a series of interactive prompts, such as “Who has more cake?” “Which slice is bigger?” the book invites young readers to visually evaluate portions and understand fraction fundamentals. Widjaja doesn’t rely on abstract numerical explanations. Instead, she offers real-world scenarios, underpinning the idea that smaller denominators yield larger pieces and that fractions are a natural part of everyday life.
The activities build gradually, guiding young learners as they learn to order fractions, identify equivalencies, and pair fractional portions to form wholes. Repetition makes exercises accessible without feeling tedious. Visual learning is at the center, and the text is minimal, helping readers keep their focus. However, to extend the lessons beyond circling, marking, and pointing to answers, younger children may need guidance from an adult. Andreea Hompoth-Voicu’s use of color-coded illustrations makes the comparison of fractions immediately recognizable and brings clarity to the difficult mathematical concepts. Thoroughly absorbing and visually appealing, the book offers an easy introduction to a challenging concept. While it may not replace more detailed instruction, its real-world connections and hands-on exercises make it a strong supplemental tool for early math learners. A must have for school and public libraries.
