Author interview

A boastful chef learns the true recipe for success in Rotter’s energetic kitchen caper. Romi, a boastful chef with a flair for the dramatic, declares, “You think you can cook? I’m the best chef around!” She enters a televised cooking contest, certain her charm and reputation will win the day. Romi poses and preens, while her sous chef, Sam, is left scrambling to prep with no plan in sight. When a sugar mix-up threatens disaster, Sam has to turn the potential failure into a surprise hit.

Rotter’s tightly rhymed text powers the story forward, capturing both the whirlwind of a high-stakes kitchen and the quiet growth of its characters. As Romi shrugs off Sam’s concerns with a dismissive, “You’re here as my helper, and that’s how it goes,” readers see the imbalance at play. But her arc bends gently toward humility. In the end, Romi removes her crown and declares, “This crown is not mine. It’s Sam, my sous chef, who made this dish divine.” Vaughan Duck’s illustrations brim with comic energy and expressive detail. A real recipe for chocolate pasta at the end ties the story together with an invitation for readers to try their own sweet twist.

A flavorful blend of humor, heart, and humility—with a side of teamwork well done.
