Author interview

Delightfully unpredictable characters, an endearing lead, and a visually delightful setting enhance Heath’s latest mystery. Struggling to come to terms with the unexpected death of his wife, Alan Wright retires to Eden Ridge, the idyllic town nestled in mountain pines, to build his spiritual center. Just as things begin to look good, Alan’s best friend and favorite follower Ruth MacKenzie turns up dead. Alan once again finds himself weighed down with grief. Determined to find the killer, he teams up with The Little Red Hens, Ruth’s quirky group of friends, and unravels a dangerous conspiracy. Alan is a solidly engaging protagonist. Maryellen, Alice, Millie, Georgia, and other members of The Little Hens are thoroughly likable and fully drawn, and it is impossible not to root for the group as they dig into Ruth’s suspicious death. And Heath knows how to build an intriguing storyline with lots of suspects, meticulously interspersed red herrings, and poignant human drama. The cozy setting of Eden Ridge is spot-on, adding an appealing sense of place to this plot-driven story. The pacing is measured, and The Little Hens’ raucous banter adds to the lightheartedness. The result is a potent, atmospheric, and wholly satisfying mystery. A must-read.
