A family finds themselves an unexpected ally in a monstrous future in Collier’s exhilarating dystopian tale. 2647. Devastated by extreme climate change events, Earth is no longer the same planet it used to be. But Dr. Vela Paris is content living with her two children, Livia and Kutter, and their home service robot, Nila, in Florida. When the orb of 2147 makes an unexpected visit to their home, FIA files a protective order to take them in its custody. Trying to come to terms with their new circumstances, they realize a strange fate awaits them ahead. This smoothly paced dystopian tale relies on timely and relevant themes of familial ties, human connection, and wonders and dangers of technology, in addition to climate change’s devastating effects, which include consistently rising sea levels, extreme temperatures, rebirth of dormant viruses, extinction of vast species, poverty, and homelessness. Readers may wish for deeper character development, but Collier’s richly drawn, grim futuristic world is thoroughly convincing. Beginning with the utterly plausible premise of an earth ravaged by extreme climate change, the plot unravels satisfyingly, building readers’ curiosity as Vela, Livia, Kutter, and Nila struggle to stay alive in the face of impossible dangers thrown their way. The cliffhanger ending guarantees a sequel. An exciting, often unsettling SF tale about environment, family, perseverance, and tenacity.
