A sweeping saga spanning 150 years, Jamilkowski’s historical novel artfully intertwines global events with the intimate story of an Italian family, taking readers on a poignant journey through the troubled landscapes of early 20th-century Europe. In the midst of war and turmoil in 19th century Italy, Francesca and Giuseppe Carnabuci long for nothing but a content life. But their son Marcello’s fate is sealed with his exposure to fascist ideals. Maria-Luisa Moresco, born into tragedy, defies the growing fascism but falls in love with Marcello. Their daughter Chiara becomes their only legacy when Marcello sacrifices himself in the Spanish Civil War. As Chiara struggles to break free from her mother’s negative influence, she realizes there are similarities between their pasts. The narrative spans generations, permeating with the duality of war and peace. Against a backdrop of ravaged landscapes and fragmented relationships, the characters are caught in the unending cycle of love and loss, their journey marked by constant turmoil and ever-changing horizons.  Both Maria-Luisa and Chiara are the resilient and formidable figures in their own ways, who defy societal conventions to carve their own destinies. The secondary cast is equally compelling.  Jamilkowski’s historical research is meticulous, resulting in a captivating depiction of the time period that never distracts from the plot’s high tension. A must-read for lovers of historical fiction.
