Chapman brings Grumpy the Iguana and his friends back for another entertaining outing, this time introducing a young manatee who has a few surprises in store for them. When Grumpy, Green Parrot, Mr. Squirrel, and Little Mouse spot an unfamiliar creature near the marina, they panic. Little Mouse scrambles onto Grumpy’s head, Green Parrot flies into a tree, and Mr. Squirrel freezes. Their mysterious visitor, however, is Baby, a friendly manatee who soon puts their fears to rest. An invitation to tour the marina gives the friends a chance to explore the water and learn more about their new acquaintance.

Chapman has fun with the animals’ contrasting personalities, particularly Mr. Squirrel, whose fear of the water makes him a reluctant adventurer. His habit of hiding behind his enormous tail is amusing, while Grumpy’s patience with him lends the story a touching note. Facts about manatees, including their diet and the dangers posed by motorboats, fit comfortably into the narrative. Natalia Loseva’s cheerful illustrations are a pleasure, especially the expressive animal faces and busy underwater scenes. Though light on conflict, the story has enough humour, warmth, and interesting facts about marine life to hold young readers’ attention, making it an appealing addition to children’s library collections, particularly for young animal lovers.

An irresistible, giggle-filled celebration of unlikely friendships!
