The darker side of teenage friendship takes centre stage in De la Rocha’s unsettling tale of jealousy, revenge, and fractured loyalties. Bound by a childhood promise to protect one another, the students become involved in a revenge plot against a feared teacher. But when a mysterious figure known as El Grim Cojuelo begins terrorising their circle, buried secrets, jealousy, and suspicion threaten to destroy everything they once believed about friendship.

De la Rocha gives his young characters plenty of emotional baggage, and their troubled relationships are central to the novel’s appeal. Alex struggles with jealousy and possessiveness, Marcos is quick to anger, and Melissa must navigate the consequences of other people’s choices. Their competing desires and loyalties make the unfolding horror feel intensely personal. The Santo Domingo setting lends the narrative a distinctive Caribbean atmosphere, and the sinister El Grim Cojuelo brings an intriguing folkloric dimension to the suspense. Cinematic action sequences, shifting perspectives, and unsettling revelations maintain momentum. Beneath its graphic violence, this is a thoughtful examination of guilt, abusive authority, and revenge’s corrosive consequences.

Fans of morally complex horror will find much to appreciate in this dark and suspenseful tale.
