Author interview

The twin specters of brutal killings and real estate fraud haunt this debut mystery by Celley, featuring LAPD Detective Carlos Aguilar. A seemingly innocent bar fight leads to killing of one the involved, Lisa Nguyen. As Detective Carlos Aguilar begins to look into the brutal killing, he finds a direct link between the killing and management of Harbor Gateway Community Housing Corporation. The investigation becomes more urgent after people, including employees and tenants of the corporation start getting killed brutally, possibly at the hand of a serial killer. Aguilar and his deputy must apprehend the serial killer before it becomes too late. Although the book’s eventual big reveal takes time to unravel, until then the intricate, skillfully executed plot and surprising twists make for some exciting thrills. Tight plotting and sophisticated surprises fuel the evenly paced narrative. Celley layers much emotion into each tension-filled twist as he deepens Aguilar and Jay’s characters. The antagonists, all of them are sketched with precision and skill, making them hard-edged and thoroughly wicked characters. Celley is both precise and convincing when it comes to detailing the inner working of law enforcement and journalism. Readers will eagerly await Aguilar’s further adventures.

With its emotionally complex characters, a smoothly paced, multilayered mystery, and atmospheric setting, the novel makes for a fine crime read.
