Starr explores fate, duty, and power of love in this surprising and emotionally tense installment in the Achim Jeffers thriller series. After Achim’s shadowy boss sends him on a new assignment that involves taking down the corrupt NOPD officers involved in the unlawful conviction of an innocent black man, he finds himself standing at a crossroad where he has to pick between fulfilling his professional assignment and his love for the beautiful Jessica Blake, the NOPD detective who is linked to one of the accused. And he must choose wisely as innocent lives depend on his decision. Starr is skilled at maintaining a fraught atmosphere and smoothly integrates the action plot with the romantic entanglements of the lead pair. Starr’s writing is assured as he delivers race-against-the-clock thrills and hurtling plot. The deeply realized characterization makes it easy for the reader to care for Achim and Jessica, and Star does a good job exploring racism, misogyny, love, treachery, and faith. Graphic scenes of violence, including the horrifying depiction of the murders makes the novel unfitting for the faint of heart. This is a strong entry in the series. Fans of the swiftly paced action flicks will enjoy this.
