Drawing inspiration from gothic horror and fast-paced thriller, Riddick offers an atmospheric horror tale about a town taken over by evil in his debut. Owing to an unsettling college sorority experience, Amanda Baker is already having her doubts about the college experience. But when she witnesses a man falling from a high-rise to his death, Amanda is shaken to core. However, the detectives find no body. And that’s just the beginning. Soon terrible incidents begin to take place, entrapping the sleepy little town of Caliside Mountain in the clutches of a sinister evil. The accumulation of disturbing incidents sets the proper mood, and shocking revelations and relentless twists keep the tension high. The deeply-realized, flawed characters with a hint of darkness to their personality compliment the story’s dark undercurrent, and Riddick knows how to scare the reader with psychological buildup and gory details. The swift, evenly paced narrative and high-tension human drama are an added bonus. The combination of keen psychological insights and the looming influence of supernatural on townsfolk keep the pages turning. Populated by an engaging cast and fueled by a strong premise, the novel makes for a page-turner. Readers seeking well-done horror won’t want to miss this one.
