Cole’s adrenaline-high, fast past second installment in the Savage Dawn series creates a devastating dystopian world marked by perilous dangers and chaos. With the battle for the subterranean city of Genesis over, both the parties: the surface people and city’s inhabitants, are focused on rebuilding the city to its earlier glory. But when the news of a fatal plague spreading like wildfire arrives, Alex, Elaine, and others set on to visit the surface and take samples from the survivors in hope of developing a cure. But their paths cross with a dangerous group of refugees, who call themselves Alpha. With their plan to take over the city, Alex and Elaine must race against time to save the city. Cole’s writing is assured and his characters diverse and complex. The expertly paced narrative keeps the story zipping along, and skillfully placed dystopian details make the setting come alive. At its core, the novel is an exploration of the consequences of human playing at being gods, the devastating effect of environmental calamities, free will, resilience, and survival. Intelligently written, filled with high-octane action, and featuring badly damaged but intriguing characters, the book tops its predecessor. Lovers of page-turning dystopian thrillers won’t want to miss this one.
