An engrossing blend of mystery and intrigue, Longhurst’s latest in A Nikki Doyle Novel series is marked with solid plotting, expert pacing, and a gripping central mystery. The trauma of getting caught in the middle of a six-months old bank robbery is still weighing heavy on Nikki’s mind. Therapy is not helping much, and she has past demons to deal with. Working as a lottery-winner protection agent for Avalon, the managing firm of the United Kingdom’s national lottery, is the only thing keeping her sane. But when a dubious couple become her latest clients, Nikki finds herself back in her home village of Storr Downs, only to get caught in another conspiracy. Longhurst’s evocation of the intimate culture of the small English town is atmospheric and authentic, and her finely drawn, original cast shimmers with life. Writing with a sure, intelligent hand, Longhurst delivers a wickedly simple and yet twisty mystery centered around relatable fictional characters. Intriguing storyline combined with expert plotting and pacing keep the pages flying. Even though fairly clued, the final reveal comes out as a shock. Genuine surprises, a complex, multifaceted heroine who is less than perfect, and small-town intrigue make it a surefire winner. This character-based, deeply atmospheric tale should garner Longhurst a slew of sophisticated traditional mystery fans.
