Book excerpt

A clinical psychotherapist’s struggle with the dissociative identity disorder takes center stage in Mulae’s latest suspense thriller. The successful clinical psychologist STUART RYDER is content being at the peak of his career. But during a client’s psychotherapy session, Stuart comes face to face with his own personality disorder. Trying to find answers to his growing questions, Stuart turns to a fellow psychologist. The stakes rise as he becomes a suspect in a murder investigation. The plot cleverly entwines the court proceedings with Stuart’s search for answers to his psychological state. The cast is authentic, and the pacing is measured as the action builds to a surprisingly shocking conclusion. Paolo, with his tendency toward malevolence, proves to be as fascinating a personality as Stuart. Toward the middle, the storyline grows a little far-fetched, but Munae’s expert incorporation of new revelations conceal the blemishes. A final plot twist puts Stuart’s life in peril just as he’s trying to prove his innocence.  Along the way, Mulae brings insight and nuance to such matters as mental illness, mental health practice and ethics, and various controversial psychotherapies, including hypnosis. Full of intrigue and darkness, this tale of one man’s struggle between two personalities is thoroughly engrossing. Lovers of psychological suspense will be rewarded.
