Owens delivers a gripping, action-filled tale in his engrossing debut, taking readers on a young girl’s journey to self-discovery and friendship. Life has been mostly content for fourteen-year-old Abby except for her struggles with finding new friends and bullying at school. But when a monster crashes through Abby’s bedroom, bringing a vision of the future, Abby knows she must overcome her fears and doubts and get ready to face a greater darkness or risk losing everything she has come to care for. Owens’s prose is powerful and intelligent as he captures Abby’s struggles with her insecurities, fears, and guilt. The secondary characters are sharply drawn and authentic. A sense of doom pervades the narrative, and the skillfully incorporated themes of bullying, adolescent drama, friendship, family ties, self-reliance, and the significance of overcoming one’s fears and staying determined make this intelligently crafted and inspiring fantasy a winner. There is also plenty of magical intrigue and time travel, and while the novel will appeal to early YA readers, the writing is perfectly inclined at middle graders trying to find their own place in the world. A must-have for school and public libraries bookshelves.
