Author interview

Birdgenaw’s highly engrossing third installment in The Antunite Chronicles features an entertaining blend of sharp dialogue, colorful characters, and smoothly paced narrative. It’s been centuries since cyborg insects returned to their revitalized planet. When a draconian red ANT ruler takes over the colony, seizing individual liberty through genetic and social engineering, Beewish, the queen Bee on the planet’s moon, assigns two tiny ants, Rose and Jasper, to infiltrate and dismantle the dystopian regime. Rose and Jasper are eager to begin their mission, but remaining pure in the middle of a corrupt society is hard. Will they achieve their goal? Birdgenaw’s dystopian regime that uses histrionics, bionics, and socionics to subjugate its populace is authentically drawn. He skillfully sketches his totalitarian society’s day-to-day realities, imbuing his protagonists’ experiences. As Rose and Jasper face off against a host of impossible dangers, they learn the value of courage, strength, friendship, and explore the possibility of bringing change in a society that seems unwilling to change. Replete with easy-to-follow, nonstop action, gigantic cyborgs insectoids, and astonishing interstellar technology, the narrative touches on autonomy, freedom, oppression, technology and control, and individuality and personal rights via vibrantly rendered settings and characters. Libraries looking for well-constructed, inspiring SF stories for middle graders to young adult audiences will find Antunites Unite a winner.
