In a world on the verge of repeating a cataclysmic history, a young woman grapples with what lies at the core of her identity in Medenciy’s debut installment in the Ataraxia series. Cities are getting destroyed under king Kahel’s rule. With a doting husband and an adorable young child at her side, the lovely and passionate Salinian dancer Sophia is content in her life. She has spent her life trying to ignore the tyranny around her. But when her own life and her hometown comes under fire, Sophia finds herself reluctantly sucked into the brewing war she had so desperately evaded. This is an absorbing adventure through a world rooted in fae mythology and ancient magic system, full of imagination and featuring multilayered, diverse characters whose struggles are both relatable and authentic. There is plenty of human drama, and Sophia’s path to discovery is thoughtful and heartfelt. Her bond with Eilith, Lee, and others shine, and themes of strength, perseverance, identity, connection, and belonging are well depicted. Medenciy’s gripping writing and effective incorporation of fantasy elements keeps the pages flying. With its well-rounded characters, vivid worldbuilding, and nicely incorporated magic system, the novel makes for a thoroughly absorbing read.
