Author interview

Greene’s gripping SF tale takes readers on an exhilarating journey as two strangers living a century apart find their paths crossed in an uncanny twist of fate. When Jared Geist, Joe Geist’s twin brother, goes missing while on a camping trip, the latter becomes the main suspect in the disappearance. Meanwhile, one hundred years into the future, 7-year-old George is left to fend for himself after the marauders attack his home. He is soon taken in by the head of the local militia to be used as a bait to lure water hoarders. George escapes and finds refuge with a group of kind strangers. High tension fraught with shocking twists marks the narrative, which moves between various timelines, from the present to the barren landscape of the futuristic earth. Although Greene writes of environmental disasters, the collapse of the civil society, prevalence of lawlessness, with hunger, starvation, and senseless killings on rise, and survival, the story’s main focus stays on the intense relationships among people trying to make sense of a world engulfed in chaos. George’s relationship with the people around him and Joe and Jared’s sibling bond, especially, are at the center of the book. Brimming with violence, bloodshed, human drama, SF intrigue as well as environmental insight, this substantial novel makes for a page-turning read.
