A man seeking redemption sets out on an intriguing journey in Vincent’s remarkable novel. It was 1959 when a combination of earthquake and segue devastated the lakeside community of Pyrite Ridge completely from the world. Now completely cut off from the world, it stays hidden. When Travis Sivart, an Air Force officer struggling with PTSD, learns about the town, he decides to look into the legend surrounding it, unaware his journey will change his life forever. There’s a delightful balance of fact, fiction, science, fantasy, and intrigue as Travis begins to know the locals and the reader becomes privy to their secrets, what brought them to The Segway in the first place, and more importantly what compelled them to stay there. The cast consists of an electric mix of characters; from the adorable pair of Moll and Paul to the newspaper guys Gus and Jub, and they all come alive on the pages. Travis’s intriguing interactions with the town residents combined with Sarah’s story keep the reader thoroughly invested. On a deeper level, the book offers a nuanced reflection on trauma, guilt, regret, redemption, and self-evaluation as Travis tries to make peace with his past (as do Dr. Joy, Sarah, and a few others). A fascinating novel that will pull you swiftly into its world and then hold you completely. Un-put-downable.
