Mastering the Art of Accepting Life and Believing in Yourself
Judith Patino-Rodrigue is a storyteller with a purpose, passionately blending real-life anecdotes with transformative lessons on self-belief and resilience. Born in the vibrant land of “Quisqueya, la Bella,” she draws from her Dominican heritage to inspire readers to embrace life’s challenges and unlock their full potential.
Her latest book, Steer and Maneuver: Navigating Life’s Speed Bumps with a Wink and a Wiggle (Dirige y Maniobra in Spanish), offers a lighthearted yet practical guide to tackling life’s everyday challenges with optimism and humor. Judith emphasizes that attitude is everything and shows readers how to steer through life with positivity and purpose.
Her earlier works include Golden Cot (Cuna de Oro in Spanish), a heartfelt exploration of abundance and self-discovery, and her children’s series, Tales of The Estates, which combines real-life experiences with imaginative storytelling to captivate young minds.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
I think it was the day I realized my words could create a noticeable shift—making someone laugh when they needed it most, diffusing tension with a touch of sarcasm, or inspiring someone with a story or advice. It was in those moments that I saw how humor and authenticity could connect me with others, turning even mundane conversations into something memorable. And maybe most profoundly, I learned that a simple phrase—positive or negative—said at the right moment could stick with someone and truly influence how they felt or acted.
What are common traps for aspiring writers?
Like myself, aspiring writers often fall into common traps such as fearing criticism because feedback feels personal, comparing their work to others and feeling inadequate instead of recognizing that every writer’s journey is unique, and overloading with self-doubt by questioning every word and idea. Another frequent pitfall is ignoring the editing process, assuming the first draft is final and missing the chance to refine and elevate their work. Recognizing these challenges is key to overcoming them and growing as a writer.
How often do you base your characters on real people?
All my characters are authentic and directly inspired by real people. They carry the depth, quirks, and emotions of those I’ve encountered in my life. I draw from real experiences, infusing humor, sarcasm, and wisdom to bring their personalities to life on the page. Each character is a vivid representation of someone who has left a lasting impression on me, making them as real as the stories they inhabit.
How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
I have four unpublished and half-finished books in the works—each patiently waiting for its turn while I try to steer my creative ship in the right direction!
Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I strive to strike a thoughtful balance between originality and delivering what readers want. My unique voice—full of wit, humor, and authenticity—is at the heart of everything I write, but I also focus on weaving in relatable themes and takeaways that resonate deeply with my audience. I don’t write to chase market trends; instead, I aim to connect on a more meaningful level. By taking everyday experiences, adding my own creative twist, and staying true to my voice, I deliver stories that I hope feel both fresh and impactful.
If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
This is an excellent question. I’d tell my younger writing self to embrace criticism without taking it personally and to focus on writing to connect with readers, not perfection. The magic lies in making someone feel seen or understood, not in crafting the perfect metaphor. I’d remind myself never to doubt that my words, stories, and perspective have the power to impact others. And most importantly, I’d say it’s okay to suck sometimes. Some days, the words will flow like magic; other days, it’ll feel like dragging a cow uphill. Both are part of the process, and that’s what makes the journey worthwhile.
What’s the most difficult thing about writing a novel?
I’ve been writing a novel for the past four years—still unfinished. I’ve found that writing a novel is a rewarding yet challenging journey, with some of the biggest hurdles being maintaining momentum, balancing plot and character development, and overcoming self-doubt. The middle of the story can feel like a slog, and tying up loose ends in a satisfying conclusion requires careful thought. Revising and refining a draft can be overwhelming, but breaking it into stages—focusing on big-picture elements first and polishing later—makes it more manageable. Sharing your work can feel intimidating, but feedback is invaluable for growth. Ultimately, the key is staying connected to your characters and themes, embracing surprises, and trusting the process. Small, consistent efforts and a willingness to evolve the story will carry you to a manuscript you can be proud of.
What does literary success look like to you?
To me, literary success isn’t just about bestseller lists or awards (though they’d be nice perks!). It’s creating meaningful connections through my work—knowing that my words have inspired, encouraged, or resonated with someone on a personal level. Success looks like readers smiling at my humor, nodding in agreement with my insights, or even feeling a little lighter about life’s challenges after reading my book. It’s seeing my stories spark curiosity in young minds and helping someone feel seen, understood, and motivated to steer their own course.
Are you a feeler or a thinker?
I’m both—a feeler when I think and a thinker when I feel. For me, emotions and thoughts are intertwined, each fueling the other to create a fuller perspective.
Would you rather read a book or watch television?
I’m more of a book person! I find more joy in the depth and creativity of reading than in the passive entertainment of TV. But I do occasionally enjoy a good TV show or movie—especially something witty or inspiring that aligns with my sense of humor and outlook on life.

How crucial is it to have a working title before you begin a project?
For me, having a working title before beginning a project is incredibly important. Titles often spark my creativity and give me a sense of direction, setting the tone for the entire piece. They act as a kind of compass, helping me shape the story or message I want to convey. While some writers may find their title along the way, for me, it’s usually the title that inspires the journey.
What’s next for you?
My main goal is to finally finish drafting my novel—a dream I’ve held onto since I was 13. It feels incredible to bring that vision to life! Beyond that, I’m excited to keep inspiring others through my coaching, motivational YouTube videos, and, of course, promoting my books. There’s always another chapter to write—both in life and on the page—and I’m ready to dive in with a wink and a wiggle.
