Berlin’s second installment in the Devil’s Tango series is a sharp, breakneck conspiracy thriller that plunges readers into a deadly game of secrets, deception, and survival. Sophie Allard is a military officer and medical student trying to impose order on a life already knocked off course. The action is plentiful and crisply staged, but the novel’s greatest strength is the volatile partnership between Sophie and Lovac. Her instinct to save lives collides with his ruthlessly pragmatic approach to survival, producing sharp exchanges, dark humor, and a steadily evolving respect between two people accustomed to relying on themselves. The conspiracy unfolds in carefully constructed layers, with revelations continually reshaping what the characters (and the reader) believe they understand. 

A smart, muscular, cinematic thriller driven by an engagingly mismatched pair of protagonists, formidable adversaries, and a twisting conspiracy in which paranoia isn’t a weakness; it’s a survival skill.
