Author interview

Another first-rate case for the former prosecutor Dana Hangrove, who is serving as an appellate judge in Manhattan’s justice system in Kemanis’s intricate sixth installment in Dana Hargrove series. As an appellate judge, Dana finds herself in a heartbreaking dilemma after a terminally ill teenager is ripped from her home by the state agency to forcibly impose medical treatment against her will. Things become even more complicated after Travis, Dana’s son, who is now a rising star in appellate advocacy, takes a legal position in the teen’s case. But when Natalie, Dana’s daughter and a doctoral candidate in cognitive psychology, becomes entangled in one of Dana’s high-profile murder cases, Dana knows she must tread carefully. Kemanis is excellent when it comes to both matters of legal procedure and human drama. She does masterly work creating multilayered, flawed characters to root for, and she certainly piles up the troubles for Dana. The story is dense, and the narrative, at times, gets heavy with all the legal details, but the level of tension remains gratifyingly high all the way to the shocking, satisfying finale. Intricate twists will hold readers’ thorough attention until the end. Both a precisely accurate portrayal of how things work in justice and law enforcement systems and a searing indictment of bureaucratic corruption and trade-offs, this is a stunner.
