In Exley’s epic fantasy, a privileged young woman with a dangerous secret begins questioning the ideals that sustain a powerful republic. Juliet of the House of Apelles has learned to navigate the sharply divided Nepa Republic, moving from patrician privilege to the working streets of Napoca with unusual ease. Her closest friend, the former indentured servant Marcellus, offers a perspective far removed from her upbringing. But an attraction to Sentinel Antonius and an encounter with the enigmatic Atmos gladiator Noa begin shifting Juliet’s understanding of her world, just as her own carefully guarded secret grows harder to conceal.

Exley builds Nepa with impressive social texture, drawing on the institutions, hierarchies, spectacles, and civic grandeur of ancient Rome while giving the Republic its own political and cultural identity. Juliet proves an effective guide through its competing strata: privileged enough to understand patrician power, curious enough to question it, and unusually connected to those outside her class. Her relationships with Marcellus and Antonius lend emotional weight to the novel’s larger philosophical concerns, while Noa introduces an intriguing spiritual counterpoint. The measured pacing leaves ample room for conversations about freedom, faith, patriotism, community, knowledge, and love, gradually revealing how each promises meaning yet leaves its adherents searching for more.

A thoughtful, richly imagined fantasy that pairs social intrigue with a searching exploration of what gives human life meaning.  A feast for fantasy readers.
