Schultz serves up an eccentric, darkly comic portrait of a man caught between counterculture idealism and the machinery of American public life. Artist Jake Elliot is more comfortable questioning the world than fitting neatly into it. His unconventional path brings romance, drugs, philosophical speculation, and a friendship with Richard Holland, the troubled son of a prominent politician. But when art becomes the target of political restriction, Jake is pulled from private rebellion into a much larger confrontation where creativity itself becomes an act of resistance.

What distinguishes the book is its taste for collision. Schultz places lofty ideas beside sex, intoxication, absurd encounters, and political theater, creating a world where the ridiculous can carry unexpected significance. Jake fits comfortably within that disorder. He is neither a conventional hero nor a polished spokesman, and his contradictions make his unlikely movement into public life all the more engaging. The novel also has a strong countercultural streak. Institutions promise order, while Jake’s world thrives on improvisation, disruption, and the refusal to behave as expected. Even its political satire is less concerned with parties than with what happens when institutions begin deciding which forms of expression are acceptable. Messy, funny, and deliberately unpredictable, the novel makes a lively case for the disruptive power of imagination. A literary gem!
