Author interview

Dellos’s exciting tale is a carefully plotted, engrossing urban fantasy with plenty of twists and turns. Struggling to make ends meet, Dee is hoping to get a job as an accountant. But things go sideways, and she is attacked by two strangers claiming to be witch hunters. Dee survives the attack but remembers a few significant aspects of her true identity: she is a powerful witch, a descendant of Joan of Arc as well as the guardian of King Solomon’s ring. To get to the full truth, Dee must go on a series of mind-altering quests. The mesmerizing tale unfolds via a fast-paced third-person narrative that takes the reader right inside the characters’ minds. Dee is a strong, interesting character who is ready to go to any length to get to the truth of the matter. The secondary characters are compelling and their interpersonal dynamic richly layered. The novel has all the right urban fantasy elements—shadowy magic, beautifully incorporated fantastical elements, and well-realized supernatural creatures. The magical rules are revealed gradually, and the atmospheric setting maintains internal consistency. Dee’s development from a vulnerable, lost young woman to a resilient, powerful witch is convincing and connects to complex themes of friendship, family, and overcoming inner fear. Readers will stay up all night to finish it.
